What to talk about in therapy
As the therapy session begins your therapist will often ask you what you want to work on today. This can leave some wondering what the options are or where best to focus on.
Really, most any topic that has been on your mind can be brought up in therapy. Even issues that feel small or trivial can lead to important and insightful conversations.
Some topics you might want to bring to the session:
Pick up from the topics of the last session
Reflect on the goals you came into therapy with. Have you met them? Have they shifted?
Wins to celebrate
Challenges you have had this week
Planning for an upcoming situation or event
Patterns you are noticing in yourself
Relationships in your life that present a challenge
Goals or habits you want to work on
Topics you have been avoiding but know you would benefit from addressing
How have you been feeling in your body
Any recurring dreams, thoughts or stories that are on your mind
How are you feeling about therapy, and what would you like more of or less of
A tool or topic you want to learn more about
If you can’t think of a topic, that is ok too.
Ask your therapist for help with this, we can offer prompts, questions and topics that we think can be supportive.
To prepare for your therapy session:
Check in with yourself, how are you feeling about the session? It is ok to be nervous. Remember, this is YOUR time, and you have been proactive in setting it aside for yourself.
Before the session, spend a few minutes reflecting on what you would like to bring to the session and what you would like to get out of the session
Start a check-in and check-out practice for yourself
